The standard advice on Rolex authentication is out of date. A modern super clone passes every traditional visual test: correct cyclops magnification, a continuous sweep on the second hand, correct rehaut engraving, and correct case weight. The tests that still work in 2026 need a watchmaker, three days of observation, or paperwork traced back to an authorised dealer.
If you only read one thing
You cannot identify a good replica by looking at the outside of the watch. Weight, cyclops, rehaut engraving and a sweeping second hand are all reproduced correctly at the super clone tier. Three things still separate them: the depth of the movement finishing, how the watch behaves over three days, and paperwork that traces to a real sale.
Why the standard tests no longer work
We sell replica watches. We have traded since 2014 and we inspect every piece before it ships. That position gives us a different view from an authorised dealer or a pre-owned reseller. They see replicas from the outside. We see them from the inside, before they leave, which is why we know where they fail now and where they no longer fail.
The classic detection methods were written for a different era. A decade ago a replica had a second hand that ticked, a cyclops that barely magnified, and a rehaut with no engraving. Those watches were easy to catch. A modern super clone is not that watch.
Which old tests no longer work
| Old test | Does a modern clone pass it? | What to do instead |
|---|---|---|
| Cyclops magnification, must read 2.5x | Yes. Super clones magnify at the correct level. | Open the caseback and examine the movement finishing. |
| Second hand must sweep, not tick | Yes. Cloned movements beat at 28,800 vibrations per hour. | Time the watch over three full days off the wrist. |
| Rehaut engraving and the crown at 6 o’clock | Yes. Both details appear on super clones. | Verify the serial against a purchase record from an authorised dealer. |
| Case and bracelet weight | Yes. Solid steel is standard at this tier. | Request servicing history, or consult a certified watchmaker. |
| Green caseback sticker | Not applicable. Genuine watches have not shipped with one for years. | Disregard this test entirely. |
| Serial number lookup | Yes. Replica makers copy serials from genuine watches. | Trace the serial back to the original authorised dealer sale. |
What actually works in 2026
Open the caseback
This is the most reliable test available without specialist equipment. A cloned movement reproduces the architecture of the original calibre. It does not reproduce the depth of the finishing. On a genuine watch the bevels on the bridges are crisp and even, the circular graining is uniform, and the engraving on the rotor is sharp. A watchmaker sees the difference in seconds. Most people cannot open a caseback at home without the correct tool, but any local watchmaker can.
How does the watch behave over three days?
A genuine modern Rolex holds a tight daily rate and delivers a power reserve of roughly 70 hours on a full wind, depending on the calibre. Wind the watch fully, lay it flat, and leave it off the wrist. Count the hours until it stops, and compare the daily rate against the published specification for that calibre. A good clone runs for fewer hours and drifts further. This test costs nothing and takes three days.
Does the paperwork trace back to a dealer?
A warranty card, a box and a receipt do not prove a watch is genuine, because replica makers reproduce all three. Paperwork carries weight only when it can be traced. Contact the authorised dealer named on the card, give them the serial number, and ask them to confirm the sale. If they cannot confirm it, the paperwork proves nothing.
Has a service centre examined it?
Rolex will not service a replica. Submitting the watch to an authorised service centre settles the question, and a service centre can retain a watch it identifies as counterfeit. Weigh that risk before you send it. If a seller refuses to allow this step before a sale, treat the refusal as information.
What did it cost, and who sold it?
A genuine current Rolex sport model does not sell at a replica price. Real discounts exist on the grey market, but a price well below the going rate is a clear signal. The seller’s history, location and ability to provide traceable paperwork all carry weight. Price alone does not prove origin. It is the first filter to apply, not the last.
Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe and Omega
How do you spot a fake Audemars Piguet Royal Oak?
The Tapisserie dial on a genuine Royal Oak is cut to a specific depth, so light travels across the pattern as the wrist turns and produces a visible shift. Weaker copies press the pattern into the dial surface instead, and it reads flat under a lamp. Check the case bevels as well. On a genuine watch the line between the brushed top surface and the polished bevel is a single crisp bright edge. On a poor copy that line is wider and softer.
How do you spot a fake Patek Philippe Nautilus?
The Nautilus has no bezel function and no complication to examine, so judgment comes down to the horizontal embossed dial and the bracelet taper. On a genuine watch the bracelet narrows consistently from the lugs to the clasp and the dial texture stays even under magnification. On complication models, the perpetual calendar has to be genuinely mechanical. A watchmaker can confirm whether the calendar logic is real or partly decorative.
How do you spot a fake Omega Seamaster?
Two features separate a genuine Seamaster from a replica. The Co-Axial escapement has a visibly different architecture from a standard lever escapement, and that is visible through a display caseback. Omega also cuts the wave dial with a laser, so the pattern shifts as the viewing angle changes. A pressed or printed wave pattern stays flat. Both checks need direct examination under a good light source.
What this means in practice
A modern super clone at the top of the market is a capable piece of engineering. Across a table, in normal light, a non-specialist will not identify it by sight. The tests that work need access to the movement, three days of time, or paperwork that traces back to a real sale. If you are buying pre-owned and the seller can provide none of those, price your risk accordingly.

Frequently asked questions
Can you spot a fake Rolex by feel?
Not at the super clone tier. Weight and surface texture are not reliable indicators, because cases and bracelets at this level use solid steel. Handling the outside of the watch will not settle the question on a modern replica.
Does a genuine Rolex tick or sweep?
A genuine Rolex automatic beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour, so the second hand moves in a continuous sweep. Current super clones use cloned movements that beat at the same rate. A sweeping second hand does not confirm a watch is genuine.
Can you check a Rolex serial number online?
Serial databases link a number to a model and a production year, but replica makers copy serials from genuine watches. A serial can look correct and the watch can still be a replica. Treat a lookup as a first step, not as confirmation.
Will Rolex service a replica?
No. An authorised service centre will identify the watch, and it can retain a piece it determines to be counterfeit. If you want a definitive answer and you accept that risk, submitting it settles the matter.
What is the most reliable way to authenticate a Rolex?
Have a qualified watchmaker open the caseback and examine the movement finishing. That is the most reliable test that does not risk losing the watch. Provenance traced to an authorised dealer sale adds a second layer.
Is it legal to buy a replica watch?
