Why plating is the whole question on this model
The President bracelet is the heaviest, most tightly articulated bracelet Rolex makes, with semi-circular three-piece links that flex constantly against the wrist and against each other. That is precisely where gold plating wears through first. On a Submariner the plating question is cosmetic. On a Day-Date it is structural: within a year of daily wear the link edges go dull and then brassy, and there is no fixing it.
A plated Day-Date at $1,350 is a good-looking watch for occasional wear. A solid 18k Franken build at the top of our range is a watch you can wear daily for years and it stays as it started. Buy according to how you will actually wear it.
What to check
- The day wheel. The day is spelled out in full at 12 and must change cleanly at midnight along with the date, not drift across an hour.
- Fluted bezel definition. Flutes should be sharp and evenly spaced with no rounding at the peaks. Softened flutes are the fastest tell on a Day-Date.
- President bracelet weight and articulation. It should feel dense and drape rather than hang stiff. Hollow links rattle.
- Dial indices. Applied markers should sit flush and level. On diamond-set dials the stones should be evenly seated with no glue visible under magnification.
The Rolex Day-Date clone references we stock
The 40mm 228238 and 36mm 128238 in yellow, white and rose gold, plus platinum, diamond-set bezels and dials, and stone dial variants. Plated builds run $1,250 to $1,600. Solid 18k Franken builds run considerably higher, up to $12,400 depending on configuration and metal weight.
Before it ships
Each Day-Date spends 24 to 48 hours on a timegrapher and we verify the day and date both change at midnight. On Franken builds we confirm and document the metal specification before dispatch. You receive photographs of the bracelet and clasp specifically, because that is where quality shows and where plated builds fail first.
Frequently asked questions
How much is a Day-Date super clone?
$1,250 to $1,600 plated. Solid 18k gold Franken builds run substantially higher because the metal itself is the cost.
Is a steel Day-Date correct?
No. Rolex has never made the Day-Date in steel. Any steel Day-Date is a configuration that does not exist.
Does gold plating wear off the President bracelet?
Yes, faster than on any other model, because the links flex constantly against each other. Expect visible wear at the link edges within one to two years of daily use.
Should I pay for a solid gold build?
If you intend to wear it daily, yes. If it is an occasional watch, plated is sensible and the saving is large.
