Manual wind, and why it matters
The genuine Moonwatch runs the hand-wound 1861, now the 3861. No rotor, so the movement is thin, so the case is thin. VSF clones the manual calibre rather than substituting an automatic, which is the single reason its Speedmaster looks right in profile. A Speedmaster with an automatic movement inside is roughly 2mm too thick and reads wrong immediately to anyone who has handled one.
You wind it. That is not a fault, it is the watch.
What to check
- Case profile from the side. The Speedmaster is a flat watch with twisted lyre lugs. If it looks domed or slab-sided, the movement inside is wrong.
- Dot Over Ninety. On the tachymeter bezel, the position of the dot relative to the “90” marking is a detail collectors check. Correct builds get it right.
- Hesalite versus sapphire. The classic Professional uses hesalite, an acrylic crystal with a warm distortion at the edges. Sapphire is correct only on the Sapphire Sandwich reference. A hesalite-spec watch with a flat sapphire crystal is wrong.
- Sub-dial hand alignment at rest. All three should sit exactly at zero.

Before it ships
Each Speedmaster spends 24 to 48 hours on a timegrapher and we run the chronograph through full start, stop and reset cycles by hand. We photograph the case in profile specifically, because thickness is the fault that photographs of the dial will never reveal.
