3K versus ZF
ZF held the Nautilus for years and its older builds remain competent. 3K Factory took the model over and is currently ahead on two specific things: the depth and crispness of the dial groove pattern, and movement currency, where 3K clones the newer 26-330 SC rather than the older 324 SC.
If you are buying a current-spec 5711, buy 3K. If you are matching an older reference, ZF remains a reasonable choice.
What to check
- Dial groove depth. Hold the photograph at an angle. The horizontal grooves should throw visible shadow. A shallow, printed-looking pattern is the giveaway.
- Case “ears”. The Nautilus has hinged porthole lugs on either side. The gap and the finishing transition where they meet the case must be even on both sides.
- Bracelet taper. The integrated bracelet narrows in a specific progression and the polished centre links should be level with the brushed outers, not proud.
- Applied markers. The gold baton indices should be perfectly parallel and evenly lumed.
What we stock
The 5711/1A in blue and olive green, the 5712 annual calendar with moonphase and power reserve, rose gold and white gold configurations, and diamond-set variants. $1,200 to $1,500.
Before it ships
Each Nautilus spends 24 to 48 hours on a timegrapher. We photograph the dial at an angle under raking light specifically so the groove depth is visible, because that is the one detail that determines whether the watch reads correctly and the one a straight-on photograph hides.
Frequently asked questions
How much is a Nautilus super clone?
$1,200 to $1,500. The 5712 annual calendar sits at the upper end because the movement is more complex.
Which factory makes the best Nautilus?
3K Factory for current 5711 and 5712 spec. ZF for older references.
What gives away a bad Nautilus fastest?
The dial. The horizontal grooves must be cut deep enough to cast shadow. Shallow or printed patterns are visible instantly, even in photographs.
Is the 5712 worth the extra?
If you want the moonphase and power reserve, yes. It is a more interesting watch and 3K clones the movement properly. If you want the icon, the 5711 is the icon.
