The Tapisserie dial is the whole test
The genuine Royal Oak dial is cut with a repeating square pattern to a specific depth, so the light moves across it as the wrist turns. Low-tier replicas press the pattern instead of cutting it, and the dial goes flat and dead under a lamp. ZF Factory is the producer cutting it to correct depth, and it is the reason a $1,200 Royal Oak looks right and a $400 one does not.
After the dial, check the case. The Royal Oak alternates brushed top surfaces with polished bevels, and the line between them should be crisp enough to catch light as a single bright edge. A soft, rounded transition is the fastest way to spot a poor build.
The Audemars Piguet clone models we stock
- Royal Oak, 52 references including the 15500ST, the Jumbo Extra-Thin, skeleton and openworked versions, and diamond-set variants.
- Royal Oak Offshore, around 23 references split between the Diver and the Chronograph, in steel, ceramic and rubber-clad cases.
- Royal Oak Chronograph and Perpetual Calendar in smaller numbers.
The Offshore runs 42 to 44mm and wears considerably larger than the Royal Oak. If you have not handled one, assume it is bigger than the photographs suggest.
Perpetual calendar, honestly
On the Perpetual Calendar references, timekeeping, day, date and month generally work and the moonphase is driven. The leap-year cycle and automatic month-length correction are usually simplified. We would rather tell you that before you order than have you discover it on 1 March.
Before it ships
Each AP spends 24 to 48 hours on a timegrapher. We photograph the dial straight-on under raking light, because that is the only angle where the Tapisserie depth is verifiable, and you approve the photographs and video before dispatch. Two year warranty, in writing.
Frequently asked questions
How much is an AP Royal Oak super clone?
$1,000 to $1,650. Diamond-set and openworked references sit at the top of that band.
Which factory makes the best Royal Oak replica?
ZF Factory, on the strength of the dial cutting and the case bevels. It clones the 3120 and 3126 calibres.
Is the Offshore the same watch in a bigger case?
No. It is a different case construction with a rubber-clad bezel and pushers, and it wears much heavier. Judge it as its own model.
